Avec le précédent album Pink Air, Elysian Fields explorait le moment présent, celui de la crise existentielle. Celui-ci se porte des siècles dans le passé et sur des terres lointaines.

Transience of Life, album concept tiré du vénérable roman chinois Dream of the Red Chamber, place l’auditeur dans un paysage onirique à l’atmosphère électro- acoustique, ponctuée du rock noir mélodique caractéristique du groupe. Les morceaux dépeignent les scènes hantées d’un conte de fées abordant le destin et la perte. C’est aussi un document social dont les thèmes du bouleversement et de la perte d’autonomie résonnent encore à notre époque.

Le roman du 18ème siècle de l’auteur Cao Xueqin, peu connu aujourd’hui des lecteurs de l’Ouest, est une épopée nationale, qui, dans la littérature chinoise, tient un rôle comparable à celui de Shakespeare dans le monde occidental. Son intrigue basée sur un couple de jeunes aristocrates dont la relation amoureuse est condamnée ne peut d’ailleurs que faire penser à Roméo et Juliette. En dépit de cette ressemblance, Dream of the Red Chamber est bien plus singulier dans ces thématiques. Sexualité, servitude, pouvoir, destin et surnaturel s’écharpent dans un environnement doublement étranger : parce qu’il est aux confins du monde et parce qu’on car on y voyage dans un temps ou le déclin de la dynastie Qing était réel.

Le metteur en scène Jim Findlay a demandé à Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow de composer une musique inspirée des poèmes que Cao Xueqin a écrits pour son roman. Alors que le duo new-yorkais travaillait sur ce projet, il se rendit compte de la proximité de celui-ci avec sa propre esthétique. L’humeur naïve et les thèmes de l’amour, de la désillusion, du souci et du chagrin se marient parfaitement avec la sensibilité du groupe. L’idée de la fugacité de toutes choses est depuis longtemps un sujet central dans l’oeuvre d’Elysian Fields, et, dans ces vers anciens, le groupe a trouvé l’âme soeur.

Ayant terminé cette collaboration, Jennifer et Oren décidèrent de continuer leur travail sur d’autres poèmes de Xueqin pour le plaisir. Par la suite, ils invitèrent le poète Lu Chen a co-écrire une chanson. Un dernier morceau a été trouvé dans l’oeuvre de Warren Zevon, dont le titre « Indifference of Heaven » semble presque tiré des mêmes pages. Le producteur et collaborateur de longue date d’Elysian Fields, Thomas Bartlett, pilota les sessions d’enregistrement, incorporant brillamment les performances du batteur Sam Levin et du virtuose de Piri / Saengkwang Gamin Kang.
